You went on the journey. Maybe a retreat, maybe therapy, maybe just a long stretch of being honest with yourself. Something shifted. You could feel it.
Then you went home. Same rooms, same people, the same few defaults you've had for years. And slowly, without any big moment, the old life closed back over you. Now you're standing in a life that looks right from the outside, wondering why it doesn't feel like yours.
Here's the thing I keep coming back to. The pattern didn't come back because you're weak. It came back because nothing around it changed. You can't out-think your environment. You can understand yourself completely and still hand yourself back, every morning, to the same room that built the pattern in the first place.
So here's the practical part. You don't change everything at once — that's how people freeze and do nothing. You do it like packing a house: one thing at a time. Pick one structural thing — a room, a commitment, a person you always say yes to, a default you've never questioned — and change that one. Then the next. Not everyone needs to leave a country. But everyone eventually has to change something real in their surroundings, or it quietly rebuilds itself.
I can say this because I'm in it right now. We're leaving Hong Kong — my girlfriend and I, together. She's stepping away from a career and the security that came with it. I've been a nomad for fifteen years and it's still hard, because this time I'm beside someone letting go of a life she actually built.
Eight years with the plants taught me one simple thing: do the next box, then the next. Peru, I'm hoping, by January.
If this found someone who built the life and still can't work out why it doesn't fit, send it to them.
Your friend in this — C.
P.S. — One honest question, and I'll ask it a couple more times over the next few weeks: do these letters still land for you? If they do, just hit reply — even a single word is enough. I'd rather write to a smaller room of people who genuinely want to be here than to a list of names. And if they've run their course for you, there's no hard feelings — you can always sign back up whenever you like.
